Писательница. Большая часть ее произведений посвящена людям, приехавшим из разных стран, чтобы поселиться в Америке и стать хозяевами этой новой земли. Автор романов "О, пионеры!" ["O Pioneers!"] (1913), "Моя Антония" ["My Antonia"] (1918), "Песнь жаворонка" ["The Song of the Lark"] (1915) и др. Более поздние произведения писательницы проникнуты духом пессимизма, тоски по утраченным страной идеалам бескорыстия и свободы: романы "Один из наших" ["One of Ours"] (1922) - Пулитцеровская премия [Pulitzer Prize], "Погибшая леди" ["A Lost Lady"] (1923), "Дом профессора" ["The Professor's House"] (1925); "католические романы" "Смерть приходит за архиепископом" ["Death Comes for the Archbishop"] (1927), "Тени на скале" ["Shadows on the Rock"] (1931)
